This painting has a special story about it's creation. In June of 2009 I delivered a large painting of mine to a collector on Salt Spring Island in Canada. I stayed over night at their amazing home overlooking the ocean, which had a terraced stairway down to the water. Early the next foggy and overcast morning I was inspired to paint plein-air and try to capture the essence of the misty landscape. So I dragged all my supplies including two easels down the steep steps to the final landing and began to paint this diptych, one canvas on each easel. Wouldn't you know right when I began painting the rain started coming down. At first a light shower, so I continued working. After some time I realized I was drenched, but I was so into my process I ignored the weather, until finally I looked down at my palette only to see the piles of paint literally splashing to the ground the rain was pouring so rapidly. Paint was dripping down each canvas as well running off the surface as quickly as I applied more. So I decided it was time to stop and began dragging my supplies back up the stairway. Of course right when I reached the top after several trips up and down, the rain curtailed and the sun came out! Soaking wet, but still inspired to paint, I set up my gear once again. This time I was at the top of the stairway overlooking the rocky cliff, where I painted for several hours longer... smoothing out some of the dripping areas and adding a few solid forms. Suddenly, I stood back, looked at my canvases and realized the rain had created such a beautifully organic surface that I shouldn't disturb it further. I couldn't have reached this texture without nature's help... so I signed the painting and with much gratitude stopped!
