The Port of Tacoma recently commissioned Mathie to create this custom Raku vessel to commemorate a document signing that happened in Japan in early September. The Raku piece, gifted to NYK, abstractly symbolizes the passage from one place to another with a body of water in between, but the whole design is connected to symbolize unity, togetherness and cooperation.

The Port of Tacoma will build a $300 million container terminal on the industrial east side of Tacoma's Blair Waterway. The terminal will be leased to Yusen Terminal Tacoma Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of NYK Line.

NYK (Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha) is one of the world's leading transportation companies.
